What Does God say about…Working on the Sabbath??

The observation and remembrance of the Sabbath is one of the Ten Commandments meaning it is very important. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8). God wants us to only work for 6 days and to rest on the 7th day. God was able to create the heaven, earth, sea and everything in this world in 6 days and rest on the 7th day. Since we are not God we cannot do more than him so we must surrender, put our trust in the Lord and allow him to provide for us on the 7th day. “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians‬ ‭4:19‬) The Sabbath also represents respecting the time God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. On that 7th day we should not only rest and enjoy ourselves but we must remember to keep it holy. Do not commit sin on this day but delight in the lord and delight in yourself. The Sabbath is very important to God. God wants to bless us with his sabbath. The Sabbath is a 24 hour time period without anxiety or “have to do’s”. This is a day assigned for men to be blessed by God so that they can be refreshed and refueled. On this day men are suppose to give their all to God for a 24 hour time frame. “And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath” (Mark‬ ‭2:27‬) God made the Sabbath for us so that we remember who is in control and who provides all of our needs. God works hard to answer our prayers so that we don’t stress out, so sit back relax, enjoy and thank him in advance!

After the times of the New Testament when Jesus was born, crucified and resurrected from the dead it became a day that people praised and worship him for his sacrifice. Today we think of the Sabbath as a day that was set aside to worship the resurrection of Jesus Christ rather than a day of rest. “After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb” (Matthew 28:1) Mary Magdalene then saw that the stone was removed and Jesus was not in the tomb. The Bible also states, “When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons” (Mark 16:9) emphasizing the significance of the first day, Sunday. Jesus rose on the first day, Sunday, and after that many people began worshipping on that day every week. “On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.” (1 Corinthians 16:2) Jesus recognized the Sabbath, so as Followers of Christ we are obligated to do the same on Sunday, the day He rose. – Brianna Michael
