Sister Denise A. Washington

Denise A. Washington was born on August 15, 1956.  She grew up in Philadelphia, PA and was educated in the Philadelphia School System.   She received Christ at a young age and was a faithful member of the 19^th Street Baptist Church.  She was always very active in the church and especially loved singing in the choir.

In January 1981, Sis. Washington married the love of her life Rev. Herman Washington. This union produced three children, Marissa Annette, Marlon Anthony, and Marshall Andrew.  In June 1990, the Washington family moved to New York when Rev. Washington was called to the Shiloh Baptist Church. She loved the Lord and her church where she was very active in the choir and in the Women’s Ministry council.

Sis. Washington loved young people especially those who were active in church and striving to better themselves and their relationship with the Lord. She supported them in many ways including giving them money to watch her kids, cooking them a delicious meal, or a simple word of encouragement.

Sis. Denise A. Washington had a passion for serving God. Rev. Washington describes her as a woman of substance. She tragically passed away on June 17, 2005 of liver cancer. Sis. Washington will never be forgotten. Not only was she a good Christian, she was also a great mother. She loved her church family as well as her family here and back home in Philadelphia.

Sis Washington is greatly missed, but is not missing. We all know that she is with the Lord. She is probably looking down on us and smiling. Then again, she is most likely running around Heaven praising the Lord.

Sister Janie Mae Griffin

Janie Mae Griffin was born on January 21, 1916 to Major and Icie Cummings, in Augusta, Georgia. She grew up in Georgia and attended school there.

Sister Griffin moved to Brooklyn, NY at an early age. There she met and married Mr. Julius Griffin, who preceded her in death. Their union lasted for over forty years. While residing in Brooklyn, NY, Sister Griffin and her husband joined the Concorde Baptist Church, Brooklyn, NY. They faithfully attended Concorde Baptist Church for many years, even after moving to Jamaica, Queens, NY for a short time, and then finally settling in West Hempstead, NY.

After Mr. Griffin passed away, Sister Griffin joined the Shiloh Baptist Church, Rockville Centre, NY, where she was an active member of the S.A.S.S.Y. Seniors Ministry. She is remembered by her peers as one with a sweet and quiet spirit. Sister Griffin loved bowling and traveled many places to bowl. She also traveled to China. She enjoyed music and laughing with her friends and family.

Through Sister Janie Mae Griffin’s generous act of benevolence, she secured the continuance of the Denise A. Washington Scholarship Program in our covenant community. To God be the glory for this powerful expression of love and kindness.
